Nangape Reviews
Yaya Diallo: Djembe, Balafon, Dounouba, Tama, Conga
Sylvain Leroux: Flute
Album Tracks
LOBI A LA YAYA (12:32) Yaya Diallo, Sylvain Leroux
IVOIRIEN (4:27) Yaya Diallo
OUTEME (7:39) Yaya Diallo, Sylvain Leroux
WASSOULOU (3:59) Yaya Diallo
NANGAPE (5:57) Yaya Diallo, Sylvain Leroux
"Nangape is a hybrid offering featuring the talents of a transplanted African drummer, Yaya Diallo, and a Canadian flute player, Sylvain Leroux . . . . Yaya Diallo's rich textural outpouring on balafon, conga, and sundry other percussive devices is the heart of the album. . . . the album is a delightful exploration of the traditional music of Mali in general, and of the use of the balafon in particular."
Mike High, "Speaking Their Piece," Cadence--The American Review of Jazz & Blues, May 1982, p. 35.
" . . . Yaya Diallo, who hails from Mali, and whose congas, balafon, tama, and dounouba capture West African 4/4 and 6/8 in so lively and listenable a manner it is hard to resist them. The primitive, bubbling quality of Diallo's music is underlined on "Outeme" (his "quartier" in hometown Fienso) by a rippling-brook background, and his sense of roots in a varigated tour of rhythms named for his teacher, Nangape. . . . Favourite sound: a wonderfully galloping "Ivoirien (a triple-time Ivory Coast variant in 6/8) . . . "
"Record Reviews," Down Beat, April 1983, p. 40.
"If you enjoy World/Africa music, you will find this enduring classic a wonderful treat. Yaya Diallo established himself with NANGAPE. There are 5 long and beautiful songs on this CD. Sylvain Leroux on flute compliments the performances of Yaya Diallo while at the same time giving incredibly intimate jazz flute solo expressions. The songs include "Lobi a la Yaya" (12:32 minutes), "Ivoirien," "Outeme," "Wassoulou," and "Nangape."
For those of you new to the sounds of Yaya Diallo, this would make a fine introduction. An excellent collection by an enduring performer. If you are interested in the African healing arts and the sound used, this is the CD you should have in your library. NANGAPE is a great expression of Yaya Diallo's cultural heritage."

"Traditional West African Healing Music, isn’t often come by in today’s marketable world filled with anger, hatred, violence, and perversion – yet hovering around since 1980 is a magnificent album entitled “Nangape” by Yaya Diallo. A multi-professioned and seasoned artist, Yaya brings to light a well hidden side of the universe – the world of purity, tradition, spirituality and wisdom. Nangape, a timeless classic in its own right, holds the primitive sounds of drums intermingling with the progressive and soothing sounds of flutes that encapsulate you in a world of inner peace. There are no real words in which to describe the virtual impact this five song CD has had on me. It’s beautifully mastered, well crafted, and the well presented music that is contained on the CD is tranquil, peaceful and utterly awing. A lot can be learned about this style of music and the values and traditions that come with it. Yaya seems to be a great teacher of that and hopefully in time more of his works will filter down my way to be consumed and appreciated. My final words would be to go and buy this album; if this album doesn’t amaze you nothing will! I don’t get overly amazed by much, but this album completely blew me away and that’s coming from a person that listens to industrial/electronic based metal and glitch-prone digital hardcore!"

"The Yaya Diallo album is a masterpiece. It has been everywhere with me these last three days, I even had it on repeat on my home cd player last night for about 3 hours!
It has rather captivated me. I have a small collection of instruments including a few items of percussion, and after having the album playing in the car yesterday, we arrived home and my 3 children had obviously been inspired, as they insisted I let them play along with Nangape--so they did!"

"Nangape features African drumming, balafon and flute. The recording is reflective of the indigenous music of Mali and its healing powers. Nangape was first released in 1980; Onzou Records has reissued the disc. Selections are “Lobi a la Yaya,” “Ivoirien,” “Outeme,” “Wassoulou,” and “Nangape.” “Ivoirien” and “Wassoulou” are my favorite selections, featuring Diallo’s virtuosity on djembe.
