Yaya Diallo was born in Mali, West Africa. He is a member of the (Bambana) people. He was raised in a culture that works, worships, lives and breathes to the beat of the drum. An instrument for transmiting traditional knowledge among the Minianka, the drum is the focal point of Yaya's life story and his link through the universal medium of music with the western world. He speaks French, English, Bambara and Senufo.
When Yaya plays, the entire body hears. The musician provides the harmony between the visible and invisible worlds and the healing drum creates physical and emotional balance by communicating directly with our inner being. Music and dance are the great preventative medicines of the Minianka whose musicians are trained to detect emotional disturbances in dancers by observing the movements and muscular tension. They use voice and rhythms to heal both physical and psychological imbalances as well as to harmonize the forces of the visible and invisible worlds where spirits are very much alive and still interact regularly with the living. This is music that still possesses the full potential for the sacred and magical that it had at the beginning of the world.
